1) Business Problem with Context: The Ugandan liquor retail market is Highly brand-loyal, Dominated by brick-and-mortar outletsm, Limited in access to rare or premium alcoholic beverages, and poorly digitized, especially for end-to-end online purchasing. Consumers seeking non-mainstream or premium brands face limited availability, Inconsistent pricing, and no reliable online discovery or ordering experience


Urgency: There was a clear gap for a trusted, online-first liquor retailer that could curate differentiated products, enable secure online payments, and meet changing consumer behavior toward digital commerce.


2) Objective / Success Criteria

3) My Role & Ownership: Founder & Product Lead. I founded, registered the company, and Owned Product and platform design, Technology stack decisions, Payments integration, Brand and and digital presence. I also managed Supplier sourcing, Inventory planning, and Market entry strategy.


4) What I Did;

  • Founded and registered Nyonta Liquors (U) Ltd

  • Designed and launched an e-commerce platform using Shopify

  • Structured Product catalog, Pricing strategy, and Checkout plus order flow

  • Integrated payment methods such as Mobile Money, VISA, Mastercard, and AMEX through Pesapal (a leading payment gateway)

  • Defined go-to-market strategy focused on Curated and rare alcoholic beverages

  • Led brand development in terms of Business name, Domain acquisition, and Digital identity

  • Set up communication and email infrastructure with proper DNS and security standards


5) Technical Setup

  • Platform Stack includes Shopify as the Core e-commerce engine, and Pesapal Payment Gateway that offers Mobile Money, and Card payments (VISA, Mastercard, AMEX).

  • Digital Infrastructure comprising of Domain management, DNS configuration, and Email setup with SPF, DKIM, and DMARC

  • Design Principles of Mobile-first UX, Simple checkout, Secure payments, and Low operational overhead

7) Challenges & How I Solved Them

  • Brand-Loyal Market where consumers are accustomed to mainstream brands. My solution here was to focus on adding curated and rare offerings to the initial catalog, and also defined a roadmap to gradually introduce mainstream brands

  • Payments Complexity where there are diverse customer payment preferences. The solution i implemented was to Integrate Pesapal a payment aggregator that offers Mobile Money and major card networks from day one.

  • Operational Readiness aligning inventory with uncertain demand. The approach here was through phased supplier sourcing, and controlled inventory planning with scalability in mind


8) What I’d Do Differently Next Time

  • Validate demand signals earlier through pre-orders

  • Launch limited pilots before full catalog exposure

  • Accelerate partnerships with local distributors

  • Introduce analytics-driven pricing sooner
